Money isn't Money: Safwan's Story

It began with a moment on a factory floor—and a question Safwan could not forget. Why should someone have to ask for access to money they had already earned?

Fresh out of college and working his first engineering job, Safwan overheard a woman ask her manager for ten days of pay. She was not asking for extra money or a loan—only wages she had already earned. When her request was denied, she walked away embarrassed, quietly saying, “But they do owe me this money.” The moment stayed with him. The work had been done and the value had been created, yet asking to access those earnings was treated like a personal failure.

Years later, after building companies and learning how money moves through financial systems, Safwan returned to that question. While people waited for payday, many were paying late fees, incurring overdrafts or turning to high-interest loans. He began imagining a system that could give people access to wages they had already earned when they needed them—not as charity or debt, but as their own money. That idea became Payactiv and helped pioneer Earned Wage Access. It also shaped a belief Safwan continues to carry: money is more than money. It can create the space to breathe, make better decisions and move forward.
